Lawns And Growing Grass

Home | Grass

My observations on growing healthy grass:

  1. Grass needs water. If you are going to grow it, do not skimp on the water.
  2. Do not water every day: The there will be too many shallow roots and, as a result, the grass will be less able to withstand stress. How often to water depends on your local climate, but even in a very hot climate I would not water every day.
  3. When I mow, I always mulch and never bag the grass; however, try to mow often enough that the grass is not excessively long—the mulcher will work more easily and it will work better. Do not worry too much about grass clippings building up; grass is mostly made of water, and will break down fairly swiftly.
  4. Some people try to discourage the growth of mushrooms in their yards by cutting back on watering too much; of course, that discourages the growth of the grass also. What to do? Realize that the goal is to grow the lawn, not to kill the mushrooms.
