Sunflowers

If you want to grow sunflowers, it is often as simple as putting sunflower seeds in a bird feeder. Eventually, the sunflowers will grow where the seeds fall. It is the way that I have most often grown sunflowers—and it has the advantage of nature itself determining the proper placing and timing for the planting.

Sunflowers do well in warm to hot weather, in full sun. They do not tolerate freezing or soil that remains wet or waterlogged; they do best in reasonably well-draining soil. I water them regularly, but the amount and frequency of watering needed will depend on your local climate. They grow wild wherever the conditions for them are good—and without supplemental water—but homegrown sunflowers need a little more care if they are to thrive.
